The Land of Incas and Moches
(8 days and 7 nights)

Explore the amazing North visiting archaeological sites and nature areas where the Moches and Incas lived centuries ago. With two nights in Cajamarca and one in Chiclayo, this itinerary includes visits in Cajamarca City: the Ransom room, Ventanillas de Otuzco, countryside, and Chiclayo : Tucume, the Sipan archaeological site, and the Museum of the Royal Tombs.

Itinerary
Day 01: Flight to Cajamarca & City Tour
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Cajamarca. Upon arrival at the airport a host will meet and assist you in transferring to the hotel and help you in registering. Rest of the morning for relaxation. After lunch we will explore the main points of the city: the Main Square, the Cathedral and the 17th century San Francisco Church, which houses the Museum of Religious Art, a fine collection of colonial oil paintings and the catacombs. Continue on to the Ransom Room which the last Inca emperor, Atahualpa, filled once with gold and twice with silver so as to obtain his freedom in 1532, to the Belen Complex which includes the Belen Church, constructed entirely of sculptured volcanic rock and the Medical, Ethnological and Archaeological Museums and finally on to the Santa Apolonia hill, for a scenic view of the valley of Cajamarca and where one may also see the ceremonial Inca Seat. Then we will take a delicious coffee at local coffee shop. Return to the hotel.

Day 02: Cajamarca Otuzco Small Windows Callacpoma Inca's Baths
After breakfast we will drive to a special area where we will do a light trek around the Cajamarca countryside to learn more about the local customs then we will continue to the famous Ventanillas de Otuzco, a pre-Inca burial site where hundreds of crypts in the shape of small windows are carved into volcanic rock slopes. We will continue our excursion to the Callacpoma caves, where we will observe cave art. Before returning to the city, we will visit the Inca’s Baths, thermal and medicinal waters. Then we will continue to Fundo Los Alpes for a taste of fine cheese and a sweetened milk delight (manjar blanco).

Day 03: Cajamarca to Chiclayo (by bus)
Early morning departure to Chiclayo. We will cross through different local towns starting from the Andes at 2700 m.a.s.l and finish in Chiclayo City at 30 m.a.s.l. After lunch at the hotel we will visit the local community of fishermen in Pimentel where we will see how they use the totora reed boats as Moche used in ancient times. Then continue to Monsefu to visit a local family who prepares for decades fine handicrafts including the famous hats, centre pieces in woven straw and embroidery. Transfer to the Hotel

Day 04: Trujillo City Tour
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Trujillo. Upon arrival at the airport a host will meet and assist you in transferring to the hotel and help you in registering. In the afternoon visit the city of Trujillo, known as "the City of the Eternal Spring", where you will visit the Main Square, the Cathedral and the beautiful residential and commercial areas which contain grandiose colonial houses and well preserved porches, balconies and churches such as the Colonial Mansions of "Casa Iturregui" and "Casa Bracamonte". Transfer to the National University of Trujillo Museum that contains cultural expressions of Peru´s diverse Pre-hispanic epochs such as: ceramics, weavings, metal, etc. Return to the Hotel

Day 05: Sol y Luna Huanchaco - Chan Chan
Breakfast at your hotel. Visit to Chan Chan, the former capital of Chimu Empire. This Empire reached its apogee in the 15th century, not long before falling to the Incas. The planning of this huge city, the largest in pre-Columbian America, reflects a strict political and social strategy, marked by the city's division into nine 'citadels' or 'palaces' forming autonomous units. This pre-Columbian adobe city is famous for its archaeological site in South America!. From Chan Chan you will visit the seashore village of Huanchaco, known for its totora seahorses - a typical small reed boat used for fishing. Then visit one of the most important centers of the ancient Moche. This pre-Inca civilization, a warrior culture, once dominated the valleys of the northern coast of Peru. Experience the amazing adobe engineering of the Temple of the Sun (sol), the tallest pyramid in the Americas at a height of 48 meters, which is estimated to have involved over 200,000 workers in its construction and over 140 million adobe bricks. Steps away are the temple of the Moon (Luna), the Moche political center where recently uncovered friezes of mystical images are believed to belong to a divinity of sacrifices. Return to the Hotel.

Day 06: Trujillo – Chiclayo Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum
Early in the morning, after breakfast, transfer to Trujillo bus station to take the bus to Chiclayo (2 hours 30 minutes approx.). Upon arrival, transfer to your selected hotel. In the afternoon, visit to the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, where we can appreciate a Lord of Sipan Tomb replica, additionally we will see several ceramic pieces. Nowadays, this museum is one of the best and modern in South America.

Day 07: Chiclayo: Tucume and Lord of Sipan
After breakfast, drive 40 minutes from Chiclayo to visit the archaeological complex of Tucume or Valley of the Pyramids, an important archaeological complex of the Lambayeque Culture (BC 1,000 / 1,350 AD), consisting of pyramids from which the extensive pre-Columbian urban site can be surveyed. After a typical Northern dishes lunch, begin excursion to the impressive Necropolis of Huaca Rajada, a Mochica funeral centre where a great number of tombs have been discovered and where the tombs of the Old Lord of Sipan (3rd Century) and the Lord of Sipan (5th Century), famous for its objects in gold and semi-precious stones, were unearthed in the decade of the 1980's by Peruvian archaeologists led by Dr. Walter Alva. Transfer to your selected hotel.

Day 08: Flight to Lima
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima. Upon arrival at the airport a host will meet and assist you in transferring to the hotel and help you in registering.
