Chachapoyas- Kuelap Fortress 4 days

One of over 400 pre-Inca stone structures in Kuelap Peru. This fortress is the largest stone structure of South America. It has five levels of gigantic walls inside walls and contains 400 stone houses. It is located on a mountain higher than Machu Picchu, is much older than the Inca Empire and was built to stop the mightiest empire of the Americas, the Wari (Huari) or Tiahuanaco Empire of Bolivia. The fortress of Kuelap , associated with the Chachapoyas culture, consists of massive exterior stone walls containing more than four hundred buildings inside. Kuelap is precariously perched on a mountain ridge at about 3000m, the structure overlooks the Utcubamba Valley in northern Peru, is roughly 600 meters in length and 110 meters in width.The 20m high fortress walls are impressive with an entrance that is trapezoidal and narrows rapidly (as a defense). Inside there are the remains of many small round houses, some with a zigzag or diamond pattern in their basements.

Itinerary
Day 01: Chiclayo to Chachapoyas
In the morning you will depart from Chiclayo by private car, van or minibus with air conditioning. You will cross 4 different Peruvian departments: Lambayeque, south Piura, the North of Cajamarca and end in Amazonas, starting in the coast and arriving in the late afternoon in the cloud forest of Chachapoyas. Box lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Hostal El Chillo.

Day 02: Chachapoyas – Leymebamba
After breakfast you will enjoy an excursion by horse to visit the colorful funeral buildings of Revash perched on a ledge up high on a cliff. They overlook a valley and tributary of the Utcubamba, near the town of Santo Tomas. The Cliff walls at Revash are decorated with geometric designs and figures of camelids. Some of the tombs are decorated with T and a cross-shaped niches. Box Lunch. Then you will continue to town of Leymebamba to visit an amazing collection of well preserved pre-inca mummies discovered in the Laguna de los Condores.

Day 03: Chachapoyas – Kuelap Fortress
After breakfast you will visit Kuelap, a spectacular pre-Inca walled city hidden atop a precipitous mountain. Although Kuelap was discovered 60 years before Machu Picchu, it is not as well-known to the outside world.
Nevertheless recent amazing discoveries in nearby areas that relate to Kuelap and to its history have captured the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies. Box Lunch. Following your visit to Kuelap, you will return to Chillo for the night. Dinner and overnight at Hostal El Chillo.

Day 04: Chachapoyas to Chiclayo
After an early breakfast you will return to Chiclayo by road. Box Lunch included. Late afternoon arrival and transfer to selected hotel. (B/Box Lunch)

Optional: Transfer to Tarapoto instead of Chiclayo. (9 hours) This adds a mountainous Amazon aspect to this trip so this cross section of Peru offers an extreme geography and life and cultures adapted to the world’s greatest rainforest, 2nd highest mountains. Airplane from Tarapoto leaves at night.

Extra price: Night in Puerto Palmeras Resort. Tarapoto.
