The Sacred Valley of the Incas, Cusco

The Urubamba Valley is also known as “El Valle Sagrado de los Incas”, or the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is a laid back valley near Cusco with a very pleasant climate perfectly suited for farming. Ancient ruins, gentle mountain slopes and scattered farming towns define the valley. The same properties that make the valley attractive for today’s tourist were also the reason why the Inca chose this valley for their permanent settlements. The valley also served as a gateway to the jungle and was easily defendable by Ollantaytambo to the northwest and Rumicolca to the southeast. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a valley in the Andes of Peru, close to the Inca capital of Cusco. It is fed by numerous rivers which descend through adjoining valleys and gorges, and contains numerous archaeological remains and villages. The valley was appreciated by the Incas due to its special geographical and climatic qualities. It was one of the empire's main points for the extraction of natural wealth, and the best place for maize production in Peru. The Sacred Valley is generally understood to include everything between Písac and Ollantaytambo, parallel to the Urubamba River, or Vilcanota River or Wilcamayu, as this Sacred river is called when passing through the valley.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas with a pleasant climate, fertile lands and spectacular views surrounding picturesque communities. In the Sacred Valley you can see ancient agricultural terraces and important archaeological sites, such as Yucay, where the impressive terraces, which are completely intact, act as a background to the quaint village. You can see Pisac, the largest Fortress City Complex of the Incas; Ollantaytambo, site of a great battle between Manco Inca and Spanish soldiers in 1536; Maras, salt flats that have supplied mineral salt to the area since pre-Inca times and Moray, four circular terraces that are laid out on the hilltop like huge giant's finger prints, used in Inca times to adapt plants to new climates, thus providing tangible evidence of the advanced levels of Incan agricultural achievements.

Tour Itinerary
Full-day excursion to the "Sacred Valley of the Incas", by the Vilcanota River. We will have the opportunity to share closely the peasants' customs and bargain with vendors at the typical indian market of Pisac, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Lunch in a local countryside restaurant.

After lunch, passing through the Towns of Calca and Urubamba, we visit the Inca Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo, built to guard the entrance to this part of the Valley, and protect it from possible invasion from the tribes in the Lower jungle. The Fortress consists of a series of stepped carved stone terraces accessed by long staircases.
