The Mysterious Chachapoyas Kuelap
|
|
Kuelap fortress is one of the largest building structure
of the Americas. Peru considers Kuelap to be as good as Machu
Picchu & is trying to make this its equal 2nd major site.
|
|
The fortress of Kuelap (or Cuélap), associated with
the Chachapoyas culture, consists of massive exterior stone
walls containing more than four hundred buildings. The structure,
situated on a ridge overlooking the Utcubamba Valley in northern
Peru, is roughly 600 meters in length and 110 meters in width.
It was likely built to defend against the Huari or other hostile
peoples. Archaeological evidence shows that the structure
was built around 800 AD and occupied until the Early Colonial
period (1532-1570). The Chachapoyas Culture (known as the
Cloud Forest people): Little is currently known of this culture,
although it was one of the most advanced civilizations to
develop in the tropical jungle region of Peru. One of the
most outstanding archaeological remains of this culture, Kuelap,
was discovered by a local resident in 1843. |

|
Kuelap’s mystery has barely been studied. Construction
began about 800AD at the same time that the Andes’ most
spectacular empire began its expansion from Bolivia. This
was the Tiahuanaco or Wari Empire, known as “The Golden
City Building Era of the Andes”, or the Middle Horizon.
The Wari (or Huari) built most of the “Inca roads and
trails” and almost every ancient city. They were in
power 300 years compared to less than 100 years of the Incas.
The Wari evolved to an empire of cities sustained by a sophisticated
transportation system implying specialization of labor, engineers,
artisans, etc. Today the Wari Empire is barely known because
the Spanish did not discover and document them with their
gold. A parallel comparison would be similar to the Mayans
which the Spanish ignored because of their decline in power
and gold. |
