Climbing to the Active Ubinas Volcano
|
Ubinas
is an active stratovolcano in southwestern Peru. It is Peru's
most active volcano. The upper slopes of the stratovolcano,
composed primarily of Pleistocene andesitic lava flows, steepen
to nearly 45 degrees. The steep-walled, 1.4 km wide and 150
m deep summit caldera contains an ash cone with a 500-m-wide
funnel-shaped vent that is 200 m deep. Debris-avalanche deposits
from the collapse of the SE flank of Ubinas extend 10 km from
the volcano.

Difficulty:
This mountain is easy to climb and is recommended
to people who are not used to do trekking, but it is possible
with a good physical condition.
Day 01: Arequipa - Base Camp
Taking the road to the snowy Pichu Pichu, we will have a
great view on the Misti and Pichu Pichu. In the sides of
these mountains we will see pre-Inca terraces, some of them
still used. Then we will arrive to Chiguata where we will
visit its church with a mixed style from the XVIII century.
Behind the Pichu Pichu is the Salinas Lagoon (3800mts) and
at the end of the lagoon we will catch sight of the Ubinas
Volcano (5670mts). We will pass by a protected area, dedicated
to the alpacas and llamas breeding. Then we will leave the
car to walk in direction of a small extinct volcano with
its crater full of cold water. 30 minutes ahead we will
arrive to a natural well filled with turquoise hot water.
We can enjoy a bath in this water. Then we will return to
the sides of the volcano (5000mts) to set up the camp and
have dinner. (L,D)
Day 02: Summit of Ubinas and return to Arequipa
After breakfast, we start climb up to the evolution of the
historically most active volcano in southern Peru - collapse
caldera on the summit of Ubinas (5670m) four hours climbing
to the mayor crater, from where is nice to see other volcanoes
and high summits on the south of the Cordillera volcanica
of Peru. From the summit is easy go down into the second small
crater, we have chance to look the deep and active point of
this active volcano and walk around on small volcanic sand
hills. We will stay about 2 hours there, visiting the first
crater and then continuing to the principal crater to observe
the smokes. In the afternoon we will return to our camp basement
and then to Arequipa. (B,L)
