The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest in
the world and home of the majestic condor. Arequipa's mild
climate and altitude (2,300 meter above sea level - 7,500
ft.) make in the perfect place to acclimatize before continuing
the trip to Cusco or Puno. Visits to the Valley of Colca have
been introduced relatively recently, in the mid 1980s. The
Colca Canyon 3,200 meters deep, one of the
deepest in the world and home of the majestic condor, is located
in the spectacular Colca Valley, a picturesque
andean valley dotted with towns founded in colonial times
and formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. Today,
its inhabitants still maintain ancestral traditions and cultivate
the pre-Inca stepped terraces. The Colca Valley
is approximately 160 kilometers from Arequipa. The main town,
Chivay, can be reached in a memorable trip of less than three
hours. After spending the night in Chivay, one should descend
to the river as early as possible. Passing through the towns
of Yanque, Achona, Maca and Pinchollo, one arrives at La
Cruz del Cóndor, an observation point offering
a spectacular view of the canyon The perfect place to admire
the great andean bird, the Condor, flying in circles above
the Colca Canyon and ideal for adventure
sports. The name Colca derives from the Inca
practice of storing harvested crops in sealed vaults, which
they called colcas, carved into the canyon walls.
